FALMOUTH — Bangor Christian and senior Brad Wilcox enjoyed a record-setting day at the Class D state soccer championship Saturday.
The Patriots defeated Western Maine champion Greenville 4-2 to become the first Class D team to win three state titles in a row. They also capped at unbeaten season at 18-0-0, the only boys team in the state to do so.
Along the way, Wilcox became the state’s all-time career leader in goals when he scored his 107th in the first half.
The Patriots out-shot the Lakers 14-2 in the first half but only led 2-1. Wilcox set up the first goal with a deft chip pass on the right side to junior Ben Bragg who beat Greenville keeper Cody Henderson cleanly. Greenville (10-5-2) made the most of its two shots in the half, scoring on the first one after junior Henry Hersey beat a defender on the right side and angled a shot into the far corner of the goal.
“I thought we got caught up in more of their style of play than ours,” Bangor Christian coach Aaron Wilcox said. “I was a little concerned about that going into halftime. It looked like we were trying to turn things around in the second half.”
Brad Wilcox, who scored 27 goals in the regular season, beat Henderson after Sam Proctor’s pass squirted to the front of the goalmouth. The score broke the career mark set by former Falmouth High and current Major League Soccer player Roger Levesque.
“I knew it and we kept the information from him,” said Coach Wilcox, who’s is Brad’s father, said of the record. “We tried to focus on the team and the other stuff will come and if it happens we’ll take care of it.”
Wilcox set up his team’s third goal when he bent a left-footed corner kick onto the head of junior Sam Proctor.
“His speed is incredible,” Wilcox said of his son’s goal-scoring ability. “He’s worked on a couple of moves he’s been able to develop. As I said after the Eastern Maine game, a big thing is also he’s had really good midfielders behind him.”
Bragg made it 4-1 when he volleyed in a loose ball from 20 yards out. Greenville junior Tristan Richards finished the scoring with a penalty kick with just over nine minutes left.
