FAIRFIELD — Two people were taken to a hospital Friday after an SUV pulling out of a convenience store parking lot drove into the path of a garbage truck, police said.
Fairfield police were notified just after 7 a.m. of the two-vehicle crash on Norridgewock Road, according to a news release from public information officer Casey Dugas.
John-Ryan Fitch, 33, of South China, was driving the garbage truck, owned by Gregory’s Disposal, south on Norridgewock Road, approaching a Circle K store and gas station.
As Fitch neared the store, the 2012 Ford Escape driven by Destini Betts, 18, of Stonington, made a left turn out of the parking lot in front of the garbage truck, Dugas said. Fitch was unable to avoid the SUV and crashed into the driver’s side. Both vehicles went off the road and over an embankment.
Betts’ SUV rolled and although she was wearing a seat belt she was ejected from the vehicle, Dugas said. Betts and her passenger were taken by ambulance to Thayer Center for Health in Waterville where they were treated and released.
Fitch and his passenger had minor injuries, Dugas said.
Speed does not appear to be a factor in the crash and the investigation into the collision is continuing, he said.
