Q&A
1) Define what “success” would look like if you are elected to serve your district.
Just like any job, my success in the Legislature is measured by my district’s satisfaction in two ways: representing their interests fairly and accurately, and delivering results. These two objectives require me to apply analytical tools to any legislation to determine the effect — good or bad — on my district.
As a planner within the towns I serve, I feel that I am well suited to this particular aspect of the job. My goal is to raise expectations by earning the trust and respect of my constituents, to work alongside me to create successful representation. I’m concerned that we have moved away from this level of engagement in recent years; what one party builds, the next majority tears down, and together we need to begin again.
Rural life can be challenging, but the last few years have been brutal on our small towns. For some of us this period has eroded the identity economy, and spirit. Our communities want nothing more than to be self-reliant, resilient, and to protect our remaining assets. In the Legislature, I will look for ways to direct additional efforts toward smaller towns with unequal resources to drive capacity for economic growth, maintain health and wellness, and restore independence and vitality.
My experience as a community planner working with municipal governments helps me stand out in this race.
2) Characterize your view on public access to governmental business.
As many Mainers feel that government business should be improved or changed, it is my responsibility to ensure that this takes place. The majority of my political platform is to expand the public’s access to government as a whole, including a more robust engagement in the legislative process.
