A six-week fundraising effort will be launch Friday, Nov. 11, in conjunction with Veterans Day, by promoting online Wreath-Sponsorship donations. The cost of sponsoring a wreath is $15 and online donations can be made by visiting the Hammond/Wreaths Across America site at wreathsacrossamerica.orgme0059.

All online donations will be used to purchase remembrance wreaths for distribution at the local veterans’ cemeteries in Augusta and Chelsea on National Wreaths Across America Day, Saturday, Dec. 17. Wreaths can be sponsored “in honor of” a living veteran, or “in memory of” those who have passed, according to a news release from Suzanne M. Paré, Hammond Lumber Company.

Wreaths Across America, based in Columbia Falls, is a national nonprofit organization founded in 2007 by Maine businessman, Morrill Worcester. WAA’s mission to Remember the Fallen, Honor Those Who Serve, and Teach Our Children the Value of Freedom is carried out in part by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 3,100 additional locations in all U.S. states, at sea, and abroad on National Wreath’s Across America Day.

In 2021, 2.4 million veterans’ wreaths were placed in total across the country at 3,137 participating locations. More than two million volunteers helped place wreaths, a third of whom were children.
