AUGUSTA — Maine lawmakers are about to review legislation that seeks to clarify the state’s rules on use of restrooms by transgendered people.
The bill scheduled for a hearing today is sponsored by Republican Rep. Ken Fredette of Newport. It says it would not be an act of discrimination for a public or private entity to restrict restroom and shower use to members of a biological sex.
Fredette’s bill seeks to clarify the right of business owners, school officials and others to dictate who can use which bathrooms. It stems from separate cases involving an Auburn restaurant and Orono school.
The group EqualityMaine opposes Fredette’s bill, while the Maine Family Policy Council, or Christian Civic League, supports it.
