WINSLOW — The man who robbed the Winslow Community Federal Credit Union Thursday morning probably wasn’t the same man who held up a credit union in Unity two weeks ago, authorities said Friday.

Police are looking into tips and other leads in the Winslow case, but so far have made no arrests, said Police Chief Jeffrey Fenlason.

Still, Fenlason said authorities have made progress on one front — they don’t believe the suspect is the same man from the Unity case.

The Waldo County Sheriff’s Department dispatched Detective Jason Bosco to Winslow to compare notes, but Bosco did not appear to immediately develop a lead, sheriff department Lt. Jason Trundy said Friday.

“I thought it was a possibility originally, but when we reviewed it, I don’t think they’re the same people,” Fenlason said. “Primarily, it’s the appearance based on the security videos.”

By late Friday afternoon, there had been no more reported sightings of a man matching the description of the robber, nor of a suspicious car reported on Lasalle Street, Fenlason said.

Winslow Detective Gina Henderson was investigating the robbery Thursday and Friday, Fenlason said.

Police said the Winslow robbery happened at 9:50 a.m. Thursday at the 12 Monument St. credit union and lasted less than a minute. The man entered through a side door, placed a black bag on the counter and demanded that the teller give him all of the money in the drawer, police said. He then left through the same door.

The robber, who did not show a weapon, escaped with an undisclosed amount of money, police said.

Witnesses described the robber as a white man in his 20s, about 5-foot, 6-inches tall and weighing about 140 pounds, wearing a hooded sweatshirt with horizontal black and white stripes, light blue jeans, sunglasses and a dark baseball cap beneath the hood. He was also described as having nice, manicured-looking hands, and appeared to be well-groomed and clean cut, according to Fenlason.

Maine State Police, including a dog tracking team, aided in the manhunt on Thursday. The FBI was also contacted.

Police said a resident of nearby Lasalle Street reported seeing a suspicious car about the same time as the robbery. He described the car as a teal Pontiac Grand Prix with a black or red stripe. A man in his 20s or 30s, possibly wearing white, was seen getting into the passenger seat before the car headed north on Lasalle Street.
