WINTHROP – Fred L. Reed Jr., 87, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2023, at the Togus Veterans Hospital, with his loving wife, Kathleen (Corey) Reed, and his children by his side.
Fred was born June 14, 1935, in Boston, Mass. to the late Fred Sr. and Verna (Peterson) Reed.
Fred grew up in Hyde Park, Mass. and spent 20 years in Hanson, Mass. with his wife, Kathy, before moving to Maine.
Fred proudly served in the United States Army. He loved his time stationed in Germany.
Over a 20-year period he worked at various companies with an electronics and mechanical background. Fred went on to work for the Department of Defense where he was a Quality Assurance Specialist (Electronic). He was an original member of the Dept. of Defense Contract Management Command. Fred was commended for his support to the International Space Station Program, he also received the 2001 NASA “Silver Snoopy Award”. He had such a curiosity and love of science, space and the unknown.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, William J. Reed.
In addition to his loving wife, Fred is survived by his children, Patti (Ray), David (Kathy), Steven (Diane) and Adam (Tina); grandchildren, Nicholas, Kelly, Kevin, Jessica, Heather, Emmalee, Debby, Diego, Joseph, Kristen and Brad; 17 great-grandchildren; and his nieces Ginger Bishop and Debbie Shaw.
Per Fred’s wishes, his remains have been donated to the Tufts Anatomical Gift Program and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
