Magella “Marshmallow” J. Garand
CHELSEA – Magella “Marshmallow” J. Garand died peacefully at his home on July 21, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Magella was born on July 19, 1947, son of Odilon and Yvonne (Bilodeau) Garand in Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn, Quebec, Canada. He attended schools in Canada and then moved to the United States with his family. He began working at Lajoie Brothers and then later started his career in Drywall with Jean Pepin. He then worked for Dirigo Drywall, and eventually had a very successful private business.
He married his wife of nearly 57 years, Denise (Veilleux) Garand, and raised a family of four children in Chelsea, Maine. Over the last 20 years he and his wife spent much of their time with family and friends in Jackman, Maine, where he enjoyed camping, fishing, playing horseshoes, and hunting. He traveled often with his wife and touched so many lives along the way. Magella enjoyed doing puzzles but spent much of his time in his garage woodworking. He made hope chests, shelves, benches, cabinets and gifted so much of his loving work to family and friends.
He was predeceased by both his parents, brothers, Lionel, John, Benoit and Claude, sisters Jacqueline, Rachel, and Madeleine and his grandson Kahlen.
He is survived and loved by his spouse and four siblings, Fernand, Julien, Viateur, and Rosaire; daughter Nancy Brougham (Terry), daughter Sylvia Coulombe-McGuire (Eric), son Daniel Garand (Corina), and daughter Tina Branson (Paul). He is also Pépère to seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
There are no planned public visiting hours. Services will be held at St. Augustine’s Church on July 29, 2023, at 11 a.m., followed by a reception downstairs.
