Charles Leroy Dodge Sr

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Charles Leroy Dodge Sr., 74, of Newport News, Va., passed away on Monday, Sept. 11, 2023, at home surrounded by his wife and children. He was born in Clinton, Maine to Charles and Pauline (Hunt) Dodge.

Charles Dodge graduated from Lawrence High School, class of 1968, and joined the US Navy right after. He faithfully served for ten years of active duty, served in the reserves for ten more years, and reenlisted again for another ten. He retired from his military career in April 1999. He went on to be a chef at the Williamsburg Inn. in Williamsburg, Va., and retired in 2009 due to his health.

Charles is survived by his wife Frances Foley; daughters Pauline Gurske, Charlene Farrington (Jamey), and Francine Westgate (Will), son Charles Jr. (Jessica) all of whom reside in Virginia; sisters Barbara Elliott (Daniel), Paulette Scott, Charlene Taylor, Brenda Comeau, and Lisa Pollard, brothers Gary (Sandy) and Bill (Terri) Dodge, all of whom reside in Central Maine; grandchildren Myles Westgate, Seth Westgate, Ethan Westgate, and Trevor Farrington, granddaughter L. Aislinn Farrington; great-granddaughters Olivia Loria-Farrington and Ella Westgate living in Virginia. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Pauline Dodge; brothers Dana, Terry, Jimmy, and Dennis, sisters Danette and Alfreda Dodge.

A graveside service with full honors for Charles will be held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Hampton-Veterans Memorial Gardens, 155 Butler Farm Road, Hampton, Virginia. The service will be led by Reverend William Westgate, husband of Francine, Patricia Waye of Bakersfield, Calif. will sing.
