Donald A. Roberts
SOUTH YARMOUTH, Mass. – Donald A. Roberts passed away on Nov. 12, 2023.
Born on Dec. 17, 1935, in Medford, Mass., Don was the son of Albert A. and Linette V. (Ouellette) Roberts. He was raised and educated in Auburn, Maine, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1955.
After graduating, he began his broadcasting career as a disc jockey, spinning popular music at a local Lewiston radio station. He married the love of his life, Gabrielle (St. Laurent), in 1957. Don was employed by WFAU in Augusta, winning the Maine Sportscaster of the Year award in 1962. He then moved on to Lima, Ohio, working for several years as a television and radio sportscaster. Don returned to Maine as station manager for the brand new WABK radio, hiring all the station’s talent and helping to create a new choice for radio in the greater Augusta area. He later became part owner and manager of the former WRDO radio in downtown Augusta. He next served as the station manager of State Cable TV. Don followed this up by creating his own media consulting firm, working with local businesses and political candidates.
But Don’s proudest moments came as the “voice of the Cony Rams”, serving as play-by-play announcer for the boys’ football and basketball teams. One of his greatest career thrills was realized when he announced for the Rams’ 1978 victory in the New England Championship basketball game. Don was inducted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 for his years of coverage of Cony Sports. Don was proud to have served on the Augusta City Council and numerous local committees over the years. He also wrote a regular newspaper column for a number of years, referring often to the belief that “All Politics Are Local”. A lifelong sports fan and golfer, Don and his wife moved to Cape Cod in 2021 to be near family, but Maine was his home.
Don leaves behind his beloved wife of 67 years, Gabrielle, daughters Lynn, Tammy, and grandson, John.
Don’s visiting hours will be in the Knowlton and Hewins Funeral Home, 1 Church Street, Augusta on Monday, Dec. 11, 2023, from 3-5 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited.
