Michael J. Morin

SKOWHEGAN – Michael Joseph Morin, 99, passed away on Feb. 3, 2024, at Cedar Ridge in Skowhegan surrounded by his loving family and holding the hand of his wife of 70 years, Yolande. Michael was born on April 8, 1924, in New Britain, Connecticut, the son of Ernest and Odile (Foster) Morin.

Michael was the third of 14 children. He was raised on the family farm in St. Martin, Quebec during the great depression. He was in the Canadian Army during World War II and moved to Bingham, Maine in the late 1940’s, working in the woods. He worked at the Quimby mill in Bingham for 17 years before buying his first truck in 1967 and starting M.J. Morin Trucking until his retirement in 1980.

Michael married Yolande Marie Hebert on Aug. 31, 1953, in St. George, Quebec. Together they raised five sons. Michael was a communicant of St. Peters parish in Bingham and later Christ the King parish in Skowhegan. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for 40 years. He also served on the parish council at St. Peters. Michael and Yolande enjoyed square dancing in the 1970’s and 80’s. They spent their winters in Zepher Hills, Florida for 38 years, making many friends in the process.

Michael was predeceased by his parents and seven siblings. He is survived by his wife, Yolande, sons Steve (Sharon) of Skowhegan, John (Nancy) of Hudson, Florida, Paul (Barbara) of Oakland, Rick (Mary) of Cornville and James (Molly) of Skowhegan. He leaves behind 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Micheal had a very rich and wonderful life. He bought his first home on Murray Street in Bingham in 1958 then moved into a new home on the Goodrich Road in Bingham in 1976, then building another home on Goodrich Road in 1988. They lived there for 15 years before moving to Michael Street in Skowhegan in 2003. Michael enjoyed playing his fiddle up until the age of 93. He enjoyed playing cards and was an accomplished pool player. He enjoyed playing pool with his sons and grandsons until the age of 97. His family was always the most important part of his life, whether it was family gatherings or helping his sons build their homes. His grandchildren and great grandchildren brought him great joy.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cedar Ridge Nursing Home as well as the Beacon Hospice staff for their loving kindness during Dad’s final days.

The funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m., on February 15, in St. Peters Church, Owns Street, Bingham, with a reception to follow at Patricks Pub, 36 Main St., Bingham, for family and friends.
