AUGUSTA – Jutta Hartung, 92, a resident of Norway Circle in Augusta, died Feb. 21, 2024.
She was born in Potsdam, Germany, the daughter of Oskar and Johnna Wissel. She grew up and was educated in Wiesbaden, Germany, where she attended the Art Academy, majoring in fashion design.
On Dec. 21, 1951, she married Willi Hartung, also of Wiesbaden, Germany.
She came to the United States together with her husband and their four-year old son Michael in 1956. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1961. Mrs. Hartung and her family resided in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Waldoboro and Jefferson, Maine, and moved to Augusta in 1980.
Jutta was a very active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Augusta, where she was a past president and treasurer, vice president, and as a chairwoman of the Social Awareness Committee, and as education chairwoman on the governing board of the New England Church Women of the former American Lutheran Church. She was a former president and treasurer of the Jefferson Women’s Club. Mrs. Hartung had been a member of the church choir and of the Augusta Bicentennial Singers. She served on the board of Life Ministries in Augusta. She was well known locally as a painter and craftsperson, and her work was much sought after at the annual holiday fairs.
She is survived by her son Mark of San Jose, Calif., her daughter Monica of Show Low, Ariz., seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many adoring friends. Jutta will be missed greatly by all who were fortunate to know her.
Following the wishes of the deceased, there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in the early summer for family and close friends.
