George J. Palmer
AUGUSTA – George J. Palmer, 87, passed away on Feb. 29, 2024, at home after battling a long illness.
George was born Aug. 2, 1936, at home in Augusta, the son of Roe and Wilma Palmer. He was the youngest of five siblings. He found his church and peace in the woods, streams, and lakes as an avid hunter and fisherman. He graduated from Cony High School and Southern Maine Vocational Tech Institute. He served in the army in Germany and was extended during the Berlin crises causing him to miss deer season which he never forgave the army for.
George spent his life helping family, friends, and neighbors. Often saying “if you want to have good neighbors, you must be a good neighbor.” Upon returning home from Germany he built and operated Palmer Machine Shop until 2006, just up the hill from where he was born.
Upon his retirement he and his wife traveled in their 5th wheel camper, taking two extended trips, one to the southwest and one to Alaska.
George is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pam; his son, Rowe and wife Sharon Palmer, his son, Levi and wife Michelle Palmer; his twin sister, Georgie Gurney; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Beacon Hospice, especially Erin and Megan for their care and support.
There will be no funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
