AUGUSTA — Cemetery historian and author Ron Romano plans to give a presentation, “An Understanding Symbolism on Maine’s Early Gravestones,” at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 20.
The talk will be held in the Community Meeting Room at Lithgow Public Library, 45 Winthrop St.
Romano will describe in this heavily illustrated presentation the “anatomy” of a gravestone, discuss the types of materials found in burying grounds, and explain the meanings of dozens of gravestone images, according to a news release from the library.
He’ll explore this topic with some additional context regarding how cemetery landscapes have evolved over time. The difference between a cemetery and a graveyard will be answered in this program.
Romano is author of four cemetery- and gravestone-themed books. He’s designed tours of 20 historic cemeteries in Maine and beyond. He is an officer on the board of the Association for Gravestone Studies, and serves locally on the board of the friends of Portland’s oldest burying ground, Eastern Cemetery,established in 1668.
