Norma Louise (Hall) Wright
MT. VERNON – Norma Louise (Hall) Wright passed peacefully on May 5, 2024, after a 7 month struggle with her health. Norma was born on May 18, 1946, in Augusta. She was the daughter of Milton Hall and Barbara (Richards) Hall of Mt. Vernon.
Norma attended Winthrop High School, and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Thomas College in Waterville in 1968. She was the first college graduate in the Hall family. She taught briefly at Rangeley Lakes Regional School until she married and moved to Waterville and had children.
She returned to Mt. Vernon in 1976. She spent much of her career working at Saunders Manufacturing in Readfield until her retirement in 2011. She enjoyed the people she worked for and with and made many close friends in the time she was there. She also worked part-time at Sitoo George’s Restaurant in Waterville where in 1984 she met her life-long love and companion, Bob Laney. Their relationship would span the next forty years, until her recent passing.
Norma loved being at home with Bob. She enjoyed flea markets, lawn sales, vegetable gardening, canning, antiques, animals (especially her chipmunks), shopping, cooking, birdwatching, and most of all, being a mother and grandmother.
She and Bob were given the nicknames, “Mamie” and “Bupie” when her granddaughter, Kassidy, was just learning to talk. They are still known as Mamie and Bupie, even though both her grandchildren are now into adulthood.
She was a loving and caring daughter, who felt privileged to take the lead in the care of her parents, Milton and Barbara, before their passing. She fought gracefully with courage, optimism, and without complaint through the course of the illnesses that would take her life.
Norma was predeceased by her parents, Milton and Barbara Hall; her son, Steven Lee Wright; aunts and uncles; and her niece Sherry Watson. She is survived by her loving daughter Jennifer Wright; grandchildren Evelyn and Kassidy, and Kassidy’s husband Jo Freitas. She is also survived by her three sisters, Donna Michaud and Rayma Jacobs of Mt. Vernon, and Sharon Holmes and her husband Ronald of New Sharon; nephews Jerry and Frank Michaud, nieces Rayma Ashby and Katherine Holmes, and their significant others and children.
Norma requested that a funeral service not be held, rather, a graveside service will take place on June 14 at 2 p.m., at the Bean Cemetery in Mt. Vernon. All are welcome. A gathering to celebrate Norma’s life will take place at her daughter Jennifer’s house directly following her burial.
The family would like to thank the cardiac team at Maine General in Augusta, and Maine Medical Center in Portland for the good care they gave to Norma. We would also like to thank the members of the Mt. Vernon Rescue and Winthrop Ambulance Service.
Arrangements are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop, where memories, condolences and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of our website at http://www.khrfuneralhomes.com
