The intentional destruction of Atlantic Salmon as well as their spawning and rearing habitat by the town of Phillips is an absolute tragedy and disgrace (“Endangered Atlantic salmon takes hit from river dredging; Maine investigates,” June 30).
The town officials responsible must be prosecuted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for violating the Endangered Species Act. Their actions are disgusting beyond words. That river will never be the same, its channel destroyed and turned into a drainage ditch and its shade-providing banks denuded. The town must be required to repair the damage as much as possible. This will cost millions of dollars which the town must pay and it will never restore the river to its natural condition.
People have been working for decades to restore critically endangered Atlantic Salmon and this one very stupid, unthinking act has caused irreparable damage and those responsible must be held accountable.
