Loretta Jane Wheeler Whytock

AUGUSTA/WESTBROOK – Loretta Jane Wheeler Whytock, wife of Robert D. Whytock (1931-2015), Mother of Robert C. Whytock, passed away comfortably at her apartment at Avita in Westbrook, Maine early in the evening of August 15, 2024.

Jane was born to Lisle and Jeanette Wheeler on April 8, 1931.

Jane grew up on the family potato farm in Presque Isle where she was a graduate of the High School class of 1948. As a young teenager she loved watching the WW2 airmen “fly low and fast” over the river as Presque Isle was a refueling stop heading to the European theater. Summers during her four years at the University of Maine in Orono and after graduating, Jane worked at Gould & Smith.  UMO is where she met Bob Whytock. They were married on June 12th, 1954, in Presque Isle. Jane spent “two glorious years” in Arkansas when Bob served in the Army after graduation, serving with many in that post WW2 era who felt the need to serve. They returned to Maine where Jane taught 5th grade while Bob taught math and coached football at Williams High School in Oakland, Maine.  Jane and Bob had their only son, Bobby, in June of 1958, the same year they moved to Augusta when Bob accepted a teaching and head football coaching position at Cony High School. Jane taught 5th grade at Williams School for several years, followed by teaching English and Business Services, including typing, at Cony for many years.

Following her retirement, she worked as a reader and assistant to Attorney Ray Hepper at Central Maine Power in Augusta. Jane enjoyed her evenings at home reading, while Bob was refereeing basketball games, and looked forward to her annual service in the ticket booth at the Augusta Civic Center assisting with the High School Basketball tournaments. She also enjoyed playing golf, her regular Bridge games, and had several cats as family pets over the years.

Jane was predeceased by her husband Robert in 2015.  She is survived by her son, Robert and his wife Juli-ann of Windham; her granddaughters Holly and Elizabeth Whytock of Granby, Conn., and Marblehead, Mass.; sister Linda Kirstein and her husband David of Scarborough; along with her niece Katie Kessler, husband Adam and children Gabriella and Ezra of Portland; nephew Andrew Kirstein and wife Marah of Westbrook, and niece Aura Kirstein and her husband Gino Sferra of Washington DC.
