Dale G. Russell I

RICHMOND – Dale G. Russell I, 90, died peacefully on Sept. 21, 2024, his loving family was by his side.

Dale was born in Smyrna Mills, on June 16, 1934, the son of the late Horace F. and Eva R. (White) Russell.

Dale married the love of his life Mary Rideout in Gardiner. Together, they resided in Richmond where they raised their two sons. They shared 63 years of marriage until her passing in 2019.

He was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served several different positions throughout the years there.

During his working career, Dale worked at a Papermill for more than 20 years. After earning a business degree and an accounting degree, in 1988 Dale and Mary opened the very first Subway Sandwich Shop in Augusta, with a second to follow shortly thereafter. Dale also co-owned Russell’s Gems in Hallowell with his son Darren for many years, closing its doors after Mary’s passing.

Dale’s favorite time was spent with friends and family, learning the gospel, and reminiscing of old times – there were so many great stories. He loved camping (he had the best “Tarzan” call) but he LIVED to fish!

Dale is survived by two sons, Darren and his wife Vicky Russell of Winthrop and Dale II and his wife Cheryl Russell of Creswell, Ore.; two granddaughters, Amy and her husband Kevin Arsenault of Winthrop and Kyra and her husband Cody Martin of Creswell, Ore.; three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Landon and Joleen; three sisters, Doreen, Delores (Jitter) and Dawn Gay.

A graveside service will be held on Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, at 3 p.m., at the Libby Hill Cemetery, Libby Hill Road, Gardiner. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Staples Funeral Home website http://www.StaplesFuneralHome.com.
