Gary Robert Murray
HALLOWELL – Gary Robert Murray, loving husband, father, and grandfather recently passed away at Maine General Medical Center (MGMC) in Augusta following a brief illness.
Gary graduated from Cony High School and continued his education, receiving a two-year degree in accounting from Bently College in Boston, Mass., prior to earning his bachelor’s degree in finance from Clark University in Worcester, Mass., and his masters of Business Administration at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.
Gary worked as an IRS agent for several years and after passing his CPA exam followed his love of education and teaching, becoming a professor of business and accounting at the University of Maine Augusta until his retirement.
Gary enjoyed travel and golfing for several years until severe back problems forced him to stop. He also enjoyed boating at the family camp while his children waterskied and later getting beaten by his grandchildren at card and board games. In his later years, he was known for giving great advice and walking around the historic areas of Augusta for hours at a time, always stopping for a Dunkin coffee and donut on his way home.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Elizabeth Murray; and his sister, Nancy Walroth.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; and their four children, Scott Murray and his wife Leslie, Timothy Murray and his wife Carol, Karen Whritenour, and Thomas Murray and his wife Dawn; seven grandchildren, Kelsey and Emily Murray, Christopher Murray, Kallie and Robert Whritenour, Morgan Rae and Meadow Murray; and great-grandchild, Iris. He is also survived by his brother, Leo Murray of New York City, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
Gary’s family thanks the medical staff at MGMC who cared for him and our family during his illness with both kindness and compassion.
At Gary’s request, a private graveside service will be held at a later date.
