Joseph Norman Roy

WINTHROP – Joseph Norman Roy, 78, passed away peacefully on Monday Oct. 7, 2024, at Togus VA Medical Center. His loving wife of 56 years, Joyce (Gaillardet) Roy was by his side.

Norm was born on April 12, 1946, in Madawaska to the late Leonard and Lucille (Hodgson) Roy. He graduated from Madawaska High School and then later joined the United States Army. After joining the Army he served in the Vietnam War as a field radio repairman with the Army Security Agency.

Following the war, Norm met and married the love of his life, Joyce. The family then moved to Maine, where Norm worked as a quality control engineer for Digital Equipment for 27 years. Following the closure of Digital, Norm transitioned to Cooper Manufacturing in Brunswick where he worked until his retirement in 2008.

Norm will always be remembered as a kind, and gentle man who treasured his family especially his grandchildren. He would often be found sleeping in his recliner after rocking one of his grandbabies to sleep. He also enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing, bowling, going to the ocean, gardening and building bird houses.

Norm had a love for HAM radios, and was a member of the Emergency HAM RadioNetwork, and the Ameteur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). He would set everything aside every Sunday evening at 7 p.m. to join in on the “net”. He enjoyed volunteering in the Winthrop community with the Winthrop Lions Club. Norm was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus in the Winthrop Council, and later in the Gardiner Council. He was also a proud member of the American Legion, Post 40 in Winthrop.

In addition to his loving wife Joyce, Norm is survived by his sons Matthew L. Roy of Winthrop, and Benjamin M. Roy and his wife Vanessa of Winthrop; his treasured grandchildren, Camdyn, Isaiah, Rorie, and Gracelynn; his brother, Fernand Roy and his wife Gloria of Lisbon; one niece and three nephews; as well as three stepbrothers and two stepsisters.

In addition to his parents, Norm is predeceased by his stepmother, Aline (Bois) Roy.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the following for their care of Norm in his last years: Shirlie Ortiz, the staff at Pinnacle Health and Rehab in Canton, the nursing staff at Patriots Place, and Togus Springs, as well as the Recreation Staff at Togus VA Medical Center.
