Where did America get its name?

The naming of the Americas, or America, occurred shortly after Christopher Columbus’ first voyage to the Americas in 1492. It is generally accepted that the name derives from Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer, who explored the new continents in the following years on behalf of Spain and Portugal.

How inappropriate is it to remove the Columbus holiday without renaming our country?

Indigenous Peoples’ Day? Seriously? Are you ashamed to call it American Indian Day? We know how liberals feel about the word “Indian.” Just ask the Cleveland Indians baseball team.

I’m embarrassed as an American with the name Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Indigenous people include people like the Aborigines in Australia, the Sami in northern Europe, the Mayans of Guatemala and the Aymaras of Bolivia.

The liberal’s whole plan was to shame the American people by making Christopher Columbus a criminal. And by doing so, create a new holiday that has nothing to do with the second Monday in October.

Therefore, I propose we eliminate the second Monday in October as an official holiday in the U.S. and replace it with the first Tuesday in November (Election Day). What better way to celebrate the country named after Amerigo Vespucci than to create a holiday allowing all Americans to vote in person.
