The word “fascism” has appeared during this presidential election season. What exactly does the word mean? A clear description appeared in a 1945 fact sheet published by the U.S. War Department, and distributed to military personnel to clarify what they had been fighting against in order to preserve democracy. I would urge everyone to read “Army Talk: Fascism” or excerpts from it as explained in the Oct. 26 “Letters from an American” by historian Heather Cox Richardson.

The Army fact sheet explains how fascism develops and the ramifications once it is established. It reads as if it were taken from the MAGA movement and its leader, Donald J. Trump. The parallels are startling. One paragraph worth reading begins with “the …doctrine of hate fulfills a triple mission …”

We, the voters, should know what we are actually supporting with our vote on Nov. 5.
