Harold “Hal” Norvell Jr.

GARDINER – Harold “Hal” Norvell Jr., died peacefully on Nov. 19, 2024.

Hal was born in Charleston, S.C., on March 23, 1946, the son of the late Harold and Cecile (Zietinsk) Norvell. He attended Charleston schools and earned his BA degree from the College of Charleston. He spent his junior year in France, primarily in Lyon. Returning to America, he enrolled in the doctoral program in French Studies at UNC.

Hal later assumed a director position with AARP developing their tourism packages, a job allowing him to do extensive traveling both national and international, a passion persisting long after retirement.

During and after his work, he enjoyed living on Capital Hill in D.C. and became quite the museum aficionado.

In 2006, he and his partner, Carl D. Fisher, moved to Gardiner, where they made many great friends. In 2015, Hal and Carl wed in a double ceremony with two close friends.

Staying busy, Hal served on the Gardiner Historical Committee and as a very learned docent at the Portland Museum of Art.

Hal was predeceased by his husband, Carl; a sister Susan.

End of life care is through the NIH and final resting will be with Carl in Alexandria, Va. Consistent with his wishes, there will be no services.
