Catherine Joan (Roberts) Johnson

LIHUE, Hawaii – Catherine Joan (Roberts) Johnson “Kay”, 87 of Lihue, Hawaii, and formerly of Augusta, died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024, at home with her loved ones by her side.

She was born on June 29, 1937, in Gardiner, one of the 11 children of the late Howard and Louise (Sears) Roberts. She grew up on Kinderhook Street in Randolph, and attended Randolph schools and Gardiner High School. Married to Louis R. Johnson Sr. on June 27, 1953, the Johnsons (Lou, Kay and their children Tam, Tim and Lou) were an Air Force family that lived all over the United States and in Japan. Though she loved the seasons and especially winter in Maine, Kay was thrilled with her 2022 move to Lihue, Hawaii.

Kay was a woman of many interests and talents. In the early days of computers, she worked for Digital Equipment Corporation. She was an avid reader and family historian who collected and shared countless stories, photos, and articles, and compiled the Roberts Family Cookbook. She was especially proud of her Scottish heritage. She spoiled every pet her kids brought home and bred German Shepherd dogs for a time.

Kay’s homes were creatively decorated in her unique country style, and she mastered many crafts, from stained glass to miniatures to special Christmas ornaments. Her Christmas trees and holiday decorations were masterpieces! Kay was also famous for her baked beans, peanut butter fudge, for being a cutthroat card player, and for being a Yankee fan in a family of rabid Red Sox supporters.

Kay was predeceased by her husband in 2020, an infant son, Frank, and by nine of her siblings.

She will be forever missed by her children: Tamara White and husband Chris of Plant City, Florida; Timothy and wife Elizabeth of Augusta, Maine; and Louis, Jr. and wife Leah of Lihue, Hawaii; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren loved her dearly and will always remember their special times with their Memaw/Grammie/Mimo. Kay is also survived by her sister Diane and the many members of the Roberts Clan.

A private family committal service will be held beside her husband at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, in Augusta.

Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Staples Funeral Home and Cremation Care, 53 Brunswick Avenue, Gardiner, Maine.

Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared with the family on the obituary page of the Staples Funeral Home website, http://www.staplesfuneralhome.com.
