Walter S. Bigelow
CORNVILLE – Walter S. Bigelow, 94, passed away unexpectedly at his daughter’s home in Cornville on Jan. 8, 2025.
Walter was born on Sept. 28, 1930, in Cornville, son to Ruby (Wood) and Chester Bigelow. Upon leaving school he enrolled in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg, N.C., where he served his country from 1950-1953.
Walter worked most of his life in construction, including over 25 years for Farrin Brothers and Smith. His biggest love was tinkering on anything that needed tinkering, and sometimes even if it did not. People would bring things to Walter to be fixed knowing he would work at it until he figured it out and succeeded.
He was predeceased by both his parents; wife of 50 years, Sadie; son, Carl Bigelow; and sister, Phyllis Kerr.
Walter is survived by his children, Jimmy with his wife Jane, Robert, Sherri, and Carolyn; stepchildren, Maurice Robbins, Bruce with his wife Nancy Robbins, Esther Folsom, Debbie and her husband Kenneth Salisbury, Andy and his wife Linda Harvey, and like an adopted son, Mark Hewey with his wife Leslie; many grandchildren; and great-grandchildren; sister, Marilyn Gilman Kennard and stepbrother, Earl Gilman; and even more nieces, nephews; and cousins. Walter also leaves behind his beloved Pomeranian, Brady.
Many thanks go to Autumn at Woodlawn, Carol, Connie, and Dr. Prokop from Redington Primary Care for the excellent care given to Walter.
Visiting hours will be Jan. 25, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at Somerset Valley Remembrance Center located at 19 Washburn Lane in Skowhegan.
Graveside services will be held in June with a celebration of life to follow.
