David Lewis Turner
WASHINGTON – David Lewis Turner, 73, passed away unexpectedly in Rockport on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025.
Born June 20, 1951 in Columbus, Ind., David was the son of Wilfred E. and Nettie J. Turner of Washington, Maine.
He was preceded in death by his spouse, Eileen M. Turner; and sister Debra J. Turner.
He is survived by daughters Abbey E. Turner, and Molly K. Turner of Washington; sister, Barbara J. “Janie” Turner of Augusta; grandchildren Alice R. Turner and Maximus J. Turner, both of Washington; as well as many beloved siblings of his late spouse, and extended family.
David graduated from Medomak Valley High School in 1969, and graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1979, with a bachelor’s degree in political science.
David was proudly a career Military Officer, serving in the U.S Navy from 1969-1973, and the Maine Army National Guard from 1976 until his retirement as a lieutenant colonel in 2007.
After retirement, David joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in 2011, and served as Flotilla Commander of the Penobscot Bay Flotilla from 2019 to 2023. David had a keen interest in boating, and spent many hours on the water fishing and spending time with his family. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, and teaching them all he knew about life, from knot tying to politics.
David was an excellent writer, had an avid interest in history, as well as a sharp wit that remained with him all his life. He was a caring and attentive father and grandfather, as well as a devoted and loving spouse. David always made time for the people he cared about, and had many dear friends as well as a close relationship with his extended family, most of whom reside in Indiana. He was well known for his sense of humor, as well as his strong moral compass and loyalty.
He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Burial will be at a later date, at the Maine Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta, to be announced.
