Mary “Shirley” Lizotte
MANCHESTER – Mary Shirley Lizotte, 90, passed away on Feb. 7, 2025 at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta. She was born Dec. 10, 1934, a daughter of Yvonne (Cote) and Stanley Kane Sr..
Known to all as “Shirley”, she grew up in Augusta, graduating from Cony High School in the class of 1952. Shortly after school, she married Paul Lizotte and the two settled in Manchester, raising a family. When her children were school aged, Shirley began her career working for the State of Maine as a clerk for the Maine Employment Security Commission and ultimately retired after 40 years of employment. Shirley was a dedicated employee and was recognized for her hard work earning the “Employee of the Year” award in 1993.
She was active in her children’s lives as a Cub Scout den mother, spending afternoons in the ski lodge knitting while they hit the slopes with friends.
Shirley was a truly gifted artist. She meticulously hooked many rugs with her favorite group of “hooker” girls and drew beautifully detailed pictures for both personal and professional use. Shirley’s drawings were used in brochures. She completed a beautiful needlework project for the Le Club Calumet and her Festival de le Bastille design won an award. She designed the patch for the Manchester Country Riders Snowmobile Club in the ’70s. It is still being used today. An animal lover, Shirley spun yarn from her Samoyed dog’s hair and made mittens, socks, and other homemade items.
In addition, she loved horses and enjoyed caring for several. She also loved spending time at the family camp on Messalonskee Lake.
Shirley will be remembered for her fierce independence, industrious nature, and caring personality. Her door was always open to those with either two or four legs.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Paul J. Lizotte; a son-in-law, Ben Moore; and siblings, Stanley Kane Jr., and Baby Finley Kane.
Shirley is survived by her children, Kenneth Lizotte (Chirstine and daughters Heather and Megan); and Judy Lizotte (Ernie Morrissey); and several dear nieces and nephews; as well as her very dear friends Sara and Robert Steiner and their children.
We express our sincerest appreciation to the doctors and nurses at 3 West for the kindness, compassion and understanding during this difficult time, and for the wonderful care they provided.
