I watched the live exchange on TV between President Trump and Janet Mills. The issue was keeping men out of girls/women’s sports. It was a great chance for Mills to explain her reasoning of keeping transgenders in women’s sports. Instead, her reply was to see you in court. Most people in Maine and the country support Trump’s stand to get men out of women’s sports, so I was interested as to why Mills is on the other side of the issue. If Maine ends up in litigation over the withholding of federal funds due to Mills stand, then I think Mills and her attorney general should share the costs, instead of us taxpayers.
Due to longstanding issues regarding bringing girls sports forward in schools and equal pay for women in the work place, I’ve been a lifelong supporter of girls and women’s rights. It was an embarrassment for me to see Mills to take the national stage on the wrong side of this issue. It appears that she has painted herself in a corner. I would like to see her publicly apologize and align the state with the majority of us who want to protect girls and women’s sports from men participants.
This should not be a Republican vs. Democrat issue, but rather a common sense one.
