William “Bill” Everett Brown
KENNEBUNKPORT – William “Bill” Everett Brown, born in Erie, Pa. on Aug. 8, 1932, died on Feb. 27, 2025, here in Southern Maine. Bill’s parents, Kathryn Hearst Pressly Brown and William Everett Brown Sr. made Bill’s home in Erie, Pa. for the early part of his life. Bill went on to school at Yale University, completing a B.A. in philosophy followed by a master’s in divinity and entered his chosen career as a clergy member with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
As he graduated, Bill met his wife, Anne Margrethe Bonne Jorgensen, while both were doing a study fellowship at the school of Divinity in Edinburgh, Scotland. They married on Feb. 23, 1957, and pursued their paths together and passionately.
William served several congregations and communities, Montview Presbyterian in Denver, Colo., First Presbyterian in Smithtown on Long Island, New York, Christ Clarion in Pittsford, N.Y., as well as, having served in an administrative role with the Synod of the Covenant for several years. Bill and Margrethe served the Village Church in Turner during the early part of their retirement. His participation in congregations continued throughout his life, the last being during the late years of his retirement as an avid choir member with South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport.
Bill died 78 hours before his beloved Margrethe, which is fitting, as they had only dated for about 78 hours before Bill knew she was meant to be his wife. He is also predeceased by his parents; and sister, Janet Brown White.
Survivors include his two children, Neil Brown and Anne Christine “Stine” Brown; and three grandchildren, Peter Moses Brown and his wife Cailyn Driscoll, Sophia Brandl Keller and her husband Joshua Keller, and Britta Christiana Brown.
Bill’s life was marked by warmth for all, at all times, grace in the face of hard moments and challenges, and patience for all around him. He and his wife have gardened and landscaped both their homes and their combined lives together since they met. His passing leaves a light behind for all of us to know.
A celebration of his life and the life of his wife, Margrethe Brown, will be held at South Congregational Church in Kennebunkport on March 22, at 2 p.m., a gathering to follow at the Community House next to the church.
