PITTSTON – Kathleen “Kay” Julia (Lavallee) Goodwin, 90, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2025, at Woodlands Senior Living of Hallowell. She was born in Dresden, Maine, on July 21, 1934, to George Alfred Lavallee and Mary Ellen (McDermott) Lavallee.
Kay attended schools in Dresden and graduated from Bridge Academy in 1951 as Salutatorian of her class. During high school she was also a cheerleader and member of the girls’ softball team, and was crowned “Queen of the Winter Carnival Ball” her senior year.
She married Wentworth “Wimpy” Goodwin on June 26, 1953. They were married for 71 years and had three children, Glenda, Royce and Robin.
After graduating from high school, she was employed as a secretary in the Attorney General’s Office at the State House in Augusta and when she and Wimpy started a family, she devoted her time to being a homemaker and stay-at-home Mom. Once all of her children were in school, she was a substitute teacher for a few years and then began working full-time for the State of Maine, holding various office positions in different departments over many years, and retiring in 1992 from the Department of Health and Human Services.
Kay loved spending time with her family, being at camp, going out to eat, and flower gardening. She also enjoyed watching the Red Sox, reading, and going to Curves. When she was younger, she created beautiful oil paintings on canvas, proudly gifting many of them to her family over the years, and selling the remaining paintings after putting them on display in local businesses.
She was a long-time active member of the Pittston Community Daughters and was also very active in the Pittston Fire Auxiliary during Wimpy’s time in the fire department.
In their younger years, she and Wimpy enjoyed snowmobiling, square dancing, going to bluegrass festivals, and getting together with friends to play cards and games. They both had numerous long-time close friends and neighbors.
For many years after she and Wimpy retired, they spent the winter months in Florida enjoying the warmer weather and the company of their many Florida relatives and friends.
When her children and grandchildren were young, she was always there supporting them and cheering them on in all of their activities and sporting events. Later in life, she found such joy in becoming a great-grandmother and being called “Great Grammy” by her three great-granddaughters, Lainey, Paisley and Chloe. She loved seeing them and interacting with them, and when we visited her, she always asked us to tell her about the kids and show her pictures of them, even on the day of her passing. They gave her so much joy and always brought a smile to her face.
She was predeceased by her parents, George and Mary Lavallee; her husband, Wentworth “Wimpy” Goodwin, on Nov. 11, 2024; her son, Royce Goodwin, on Sept. 21, 2017; her sister, Mary Blen, on Jan. 16, 2025; her mother and father-in law, Herbert T. Goodwin, Sr. and Alice E. Goodwin; all of her sisters-in-law and all but one of her brothers-in-law.
She is survived by her daughter, Glenda Goodwin, of Augusta; her son, Robin Goodwin and his wife, Sharon; her grandsons, Brian Goodwin and his wife, Bethany; and Eric Goodwin and his wife, Emily; and her three great-granddaughters, Lainey, Paisley and Chloe Goodwin, all of Pittston. She is also survived by two of her sisters, Peggy Williams and Patricia Christopoulos and her husband, Paul, as well as many nieces and nephews.
She was a very caring and devoted wife, mother/mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was dearly loved by all of us and we will miss her terribly, but we are comforted in knowing that she and Wimpy are together again.
Our family would like to thank the entire staff at Woodlands Senior Living of Hallowell (both assisted living and memory care) for the exceptional care they gave to our parents/grandparents, and the kindness they showed, not only to them, but to all of us as well, over the past three years.
