Everyone has viewed this for themselves. There’s no denying Gov. Mills was singled out, publicly confronted and threatened using a wedge issue that President Trump calculatingly turned into an executive order with the assistance of henchwoman Rep. Laurel Libby.

Our governor’s appropriate and reasonable response to this attempt to blackmail the state of Maine requires no apology. She was the adult in the room in the face of his adolescent, unpresidential attempt at bullying. To apologize would set a dangerous precedent for Maine, and for all states. Acquiescing to unconstitutional, illegal executive orders would mean forfeiting state control by not standing up for three equally functioning branches of government. It would mean handing over the keys to a dictator.

The best outcome of that Washington, D.C., meeting would be that the majority of state governors found strength in numbers and coalesced in resistance.
