The 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act allocated roughly $19 million to Maine for the build out of an EV charging network, usable by non-Tesla EVs. The build-out has faced delays nationwide from many factors and, as of now, only 17 of a planned 41 Level 3 chargers are on line, and none north of Bangor. Now the rollout of these chargers has hit a new roadblock, the impoundment by the Trump administration of the funds allocated for EV chargers.
Not only has the withholding of funds allocated by Congress been contested in the courts, it is also anticompetitive and corrupt. Elon Musk is certainly aware that delaying construction of public charging infrastructure affords a huge competitive advantage to Tesla over its EV competitors. This is unfair to Maine consumers and to the business community.
