I am writing in response to the March 9 op-ed stating that Gov. Mills chose the “wrong hill” to die on. What I saw in her interaction with President Trump was someone courageously standing up to a bully. She didn’t choose the fight. He called her out about a policy that she did not establish. He demanded that she change the policy. She replied by saying that she was following the law. His reply was, “I am the law.” Then he changed it to “We are the law.” At which point Mills said she would see him in court.
I and everyone I know was proud of her. The question is not about trans young women competing on a girls’ team, but whether we elected a dictator who tries to rule by edict or a president who follows the law. If people feel that the policy in question isn’t fair, the place to change it is in the Legislature.
Since then, Trump has been punishing the entire state of Maine by cutting numerous programs and jobs. His colossal ego can’t bear to be crossed. Do we want to live in a country where people are afraid to speak up? Will our democracy survive four more years of this?
