I am liberal and I’m happy that Congressman Jared Golden voted to protect our elections by supporting the SAVE Act.
For centuries our country has accepted immigrants, which I support. In fact, I work with a few of them. Part of being open and accepting of people from other countries is also protecting the rights of our citizens. One way to do that is to ensure that all those who are voting are supposed to be voting. Often there are language barriers, confusion about voting laws and misinformation about voting in general. An added step of proving citizenship will help prevent well-intended folks from errantly voting.
I know some folks are worried about the details of this bill, but when I looked into some of the concerns I realized that they stem from my friends on the left overreacting to a bill just because it was sponsored by Republicans. We can do better. We can both celebrate immigration as well as protect our voting system.
