Douglas C. Cooper

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Douglas C. Cooper, DMD, passed away at home at the age of 96, in Greensboro, N.C.

He was predeceased by his wife, Mary Ellen Deen Cooper. They were high school sweethearts and reunited in 1997; they enjoyed 28 years of marriage, many of those residing in Vero Beach, Fla.

Doug was born at the VA Center in Togus, to Jeannie and Elwin Cooper. After graduating Cony High School in 1946, he joined the Navy and earned the rank of Pharmacist mate 2nd class. At the end of WWII, he was discharged and then attended University of Maine. Doug went on to receive his degree from Tufts University College of Dental Medicine in 1956. After graduating, he went into private practice in Gardiner, where he lived and worked until his retirement.

Doug was an Augusta Masonic Lodge member, joining in 1952 and belonging to the chapter for 72 years. He joined the Kora Shriners in 1960 and was a 50-plus year member. He was elected Potentate of his chapter in 1980. Doug served on the Gardiner Savings Bank board for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, skiing and golfing.

He was predeceased by first wife, Evelyn Avadesian Cooper in 1980, with whom he shared their two beloved sons, Mark and Jeff. He was predeceased by second wife, Nina Cooper in 1996. Doug was also predeceased by his sisters Kathleen Cooper and Phyllis Pomeroy; and sons Mark and Jeff. He had five grandchildren, Andrew, Kristen, Eric, Douglas, and Gabrielle.

The family will hold a celebration of life in North Carolina later this summer.

He loved his family, the patients he was able to work with over the years, and the friends he made along the way.

His daughter-in-law Amy Cooper would like to thank Polly Deen for her kindness.
