LISBON — The Class C South baseball Heal point standings won’t be decided until the end of the week, but after Monday, the top slots are starting to clear up.

Mt. Abram scored three runs in the first inning and beat Lisbon, 7-4. The Mountain Valley Conference teams entered the game as the first- and sixth-ranked teams, respectively.

“We knew it was going to be a game for sure,” Mt. Abram coach Jeffrey Pillsbury said. “Yeah, depending on what happened, we could have dropped (to) maybe fourth (in the C South Heal point standings) … This will help keep us in the top, maybe.”

Kaiden Longley pitched a complete game for the Roadrunners (11-4). He gave up eight hits and two earned runs, struck out one and walked one. Cody Osmond struck out 12, walked three and allowed two earned runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the Greyhounds (9-5).

“We had some timely hits and good defense, and it took a team effort to beat these guys, for sure,” Pillsbury said.

How it happened

• Mt. Abram center fielder Ash Rollins (1 for 3, run) hit a single to left field on the first pitch of the game, and it gave the visitors a surge of energy. The Roadrunners scored three runs on two errors and two hits.

“It gets everyone hyped,” Rollins said. “A good hit, get on base, gets everyone excited to hit the ball.”

• Mt. Abram added a run to its lead in the top of the fourth and the fifth innings, each time taking advantage of an overthrow. In the bottom of the fifth, Lisbon scored three runs with doubles from Ayden Barr (2 for 3, RBI) and Osmond (1 for 4, two RBI, run).

• The Roadrunners were able to extend the lead in the sixth inning, as Killian Pillsbury (1 for 4, two runs) drove in a run. The Greyhounds took advantage of an error to start the bottom of the sixth, putting Cyrus Tefft (1 for 3, run) on base. He eventually scored. Lisbon had two more runners at third, but Mt. Abram got two runners out at the plate on ground balls. Longley closed the inning with a pickoff at first.

“Just stay composed,” Longley said. “You know you’ve just got to rely on your teammates and know that they’re there for you. Just gotta make plays and stay down, scratch and do whatever you can to get out of the inning.”

Notable quotes

• “The loss is on me, period. I take that because I’m always known as an aggressive coach, and I’m going to keep being aggressive all the way through. I thought we did a great job of making great contact. Like you said, we just hit them at people. The mistakes they did make, we capitalized when we needed to, it just wasn’t enough for us today. (Mt. Abram knows) they’re a good team. They’re No. 1 for a reason.” –Lisbon coach Randy Ridley
