George Joseph “Pete” Quirion

AUGUSTA – George Joseph “Pete” Quirion, 88, passed away May 29, 2025, while surrounded by his loving family.

Pete was born on Water Street in Augusta, on Oct. 7, 1936, the only child of Leo and Stella (Levasseur) Quirion. Pete grew up in Augusta and graduated from Cony High School in the class of 1955. Following school, he enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1957.

Pete attended the University of Miami at Coral Gables for one year before completing his studies at the University of Maine at Farmington, ultimately earning his master’s degree. On June 6, 1964, Pete married “the love of his life”, Colette Audet and the two made their home in Augusta and raised their family.

Pete began his teaching career in 1962 in Dixfield. He later worked at Erskine Academy, and Winthrop High School before teaching World History at Cony High School for over 20 years, retiring in 1991. In addition to being a teacher, he served the school community in a variety of other roles, particularly as a coach for many of the sports teams. Following retirement, he worked at LL Bean for 17 years.

Pete was an avid golfer and enjoyed time spent on the course with family and friends, and his regular “coffee group” dates.

Above all, Pete was a true family man who considered the best days of his life to have been watching his children and grandchildren grow up. His favorite pastimes included watching his children and grandchildren playing ball, singing, dancing, and making him travel to new places are memories that brought joy and happiness to his life.

He was predeceased by his parents, his son John Quirion, and his grandsons, Ryan Clark, Alexander Clark and Nicholas McCarron.

Pete is lovingly survived by his wife of nearly 61 years, Colette Quirion; his children: Julie McCarron and her husband James, Peter Quirion, Jill Clark and her husband Scott, and Michael Quirion; grandchildren: Kathryn Ault and her husband Avery, Maggie McCarron, Connor McCarron and his wife Madeigh, Alison McCarron, Brenna McCarron, Hayley Quirion, Emily Quirion and her significant other Jake Palmer, Lindsey Grady and her husband Thomas, and Tyler Clark; great grandchildren: Sage Ault, Grayson Ault, and Myles Palmer; and his brother in law, Mark Audet.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 9, 2025 at 10 a.m., at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 41 Western Ave., Augusta, ME 04330. Interment will be private at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Plummer Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant St., Augusta, ME 04330. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Pete’s name may be made to the American Heart Association.
