I want to acknowledge the positive impact that the new Mainers are having in providing health care to our communities.
My elderly mom recently experienced a fall and subsequently required care at Maine Medical Center, followed by a rehab facility, and now a southern Maine care residence. She has had limited exposure to people of diverse backgrounds in her life and I’ve been impressed that when she makes a statement that there are people of color providing her with assistance, she immediately follows that by saying how hard working and caring they are.
Like many “older Mainers” my mother’s preferred language is French and these “new Mainers” provide the additional special touch of literally speaking her language. I wanted to let our new Mainers know that we not only appreciate the services they bring but encourage them to be proud of a much needed infusion that can preserve a foundational cultural element that is shared with older and newer Mainers alike.
