Northern Maine’s Aroostook County is not more politically conservative than Alabama, according to voter registration data and the results of the most recent presidential election.

About 39% of Aroostook County voters were registered Republicans as of early February 2025, according to the Maine Secretary of State’s Office, while roughly 26% were registered Democrats. Thirty percent were not affiliated with any political party.

In Alabama, voters do not register with a party, but to vote in primary elections, they must declare a political party preference. In the 2024 presidential primary, 76.16% votes were cast for Republican candidates, while 23.84% votes were cast for Democrats.

In the 2024 general election, Republican President Donald Trump carried 61% of the vote in Aroostook County, while Democratic former Vice President Kamala Harris got 36%. In Alabama, Trump got about 65% of the vote, while Harris earned 34%.
