The planned June 14 military parade to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Army raises many doubts about its actual purpose. By being on President Trump’s birthday, it will certainly be spun as a personal tribute to him — at great expense — an estimated $25 million to $45 million, not counting projected pavement repairs for Washington’s streets after heavy tank damage.
Some of us remember his plan for a similar event during his first term, which did not occur presumably for these expense concerns. At that time, Mr. Trump showed his complete lack of caring about service to country and the plight of our veterans. He did not want the parade to include disabled veterans revealing their injuries, including amputation and wheelchairs, calling it “not a good image.” His total disdain for their service and sacrifice is shameful. His only focus is on the strength, splendor and ceremony of our military as he envisions this as a tribute to him (as world dictators do), although he deliberately avoided any service himself.
I do hope the festivities on June 14 include open public acknowledgement for our veterans, reflecting the suffering and sacrifice many have faced for doing their duty for us and our country.
