Fifteen goats were corralled by police after escaping a trailer on the Maine Turnpike on Saturday afternoon in Falmouth, disrupting traffic in both north- and southbound lanes, according to a news release from Maine State Police.

Maine State Police responded at 12:41 p.m. to a report of a trailer becoming detached from a vehicle near mile marker 52 on I-95, the news release said. The farm trailer was being towed by a 2013 Toyota pickup truck and landed on the highway median. The 15 goats inside the trailer escaped into both lanes of traffic.

The Maine State Police Troop G Troopers corralled the goats with coordinated assistance from Southern Maine Towing, Cumberland County Emergency Management Agency, Cumberland Police Department Animal Control and Maine Turnpike Authority maintenance crews.

The wandering goats and the attempts to recapture them minimally affected southbound traffic, while northbound traffic was slowed for 45 minutes. Eventually, all escaped goats were returned to the farm trailer.

There were no reported injuries to the driver, responding personnel, or the goats.
