I’d like to follow up on Gov. Janet Mills’ public memo of June 6, kicking off June as “Dairy Month at University of Maine Witter Farm.” The governor emphasized that milk bottled in Maine can be identified by a code on the container beginning with the number 23.

It is a little-known fact that while Maine’s 130 dairy farms produce more milk than is consumed in Maine, we are buying milk into the state from the Midwest and other states from the Northeast. How does that make sense?

So, per Gov. Mills’ request, Maine people should please support our state’s dairy farms by making sure the milk that they purchase has the code 23 on the container. On behalf of the Maine Farm Bureau, I thank these consumers.
