AUBURN — Atlanta-based quick-service restaurant Chick-fil-A is proposing constructing a 5,200-square-foot building with a drive-thru at 65 Mt. Auburn Ave., and is seeking approval from the city of Auburn.

A public hearing on the request is set for 6 p.m. July 8 in the city council chamber before the Planning Board.

If approved, it will be the third location in Maine. The other restaurants are in Bangor and Westbrook and will likely take a year to complete.

Chick-fil-A has more than 3,000 locations in 48 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico and Canada and is known for its chicken sandwiches, biscuits, friendly service and being closed on Sundays — due to the owners’ Christian beliefs.

S. Truett Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Atlanta in 1967, although Cathy and his brother first offered the now famous chicken sandwich at The Dwarf House restaurant in Atlanta in 1946.

The company says it opens a limited number of new restaurants every year, even though it gets hundreds of suggestions for new ones every year. According to the company website, the real estate team at Chick-fil-A, Inc. is responsible for selecting all new locations based on corporate goals for expansion in specifically targeted markets and other relevant business factors.

Under its franchise model, Chick-fil-A purchases the land for each store, constructs and equips them and then leases the restaurants to owner-operators.
