Work has begun on the course for Sunday’s Ironman 70.3 Maine, a half triathlon race starting and finishing in Augusta.

Just under 2,000 competitors will line up for the 6 a.m. rolling start to compete for the fastest time in a 1.2 mile swift swim down the Kennebec River, followed by a 56-mile bike ride and a 13.1-mile run.

The bike course winds through the Kennebec River Valley along the Kennebec River, passing through Augusta, Hallowell, Litchfield and West Gardiner.

The single-loop run along the Kennebec River will feature rolling hills and flat stretches with shaded sections through the communities of Hallowell and Augusta, culminating near the State Capitol building.
