Andrew Lee MacDonald

WINTHROP – Andrew Lee MacDonald, 62, passed away suddenly from a medical incident at his home in Winthrop on Aug. 18, 2025. Born on March 12, 1963, in Augusta to William “Bill” and Marian “Peg” MacDonald, Andy grew up in Winthrop, where he was a lifelong resident. There, he attended Winthrop schools and worked at the YMCA Camp of Maine, before he went on to graduate from the University of Maine Orono. At UMO, he studied civil engineering and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He continued to be involved with Kappa Sig after graduating and had lifelong friendships with many of his brothers.

Before graduating from UMO, Andy began working at the Maine Department of Transportation in 1984 as an engineering aide. He continued to serve the State of Maine for the entirety of his career, most recently as Senior Designer. In his more than four decades at the DOT, he was proud to play a role in a number of important projects, including: Rt. 9 “Airline” reconstruction projects, the Auburn River Walk, Houlton Riverfront Park pedestrian bridge, reconstruction of Agamont Park in Bar Harbor, improvements to the Vinalhaven Ferry Terminal, and reconstruction of a section of the Rockland Branch railroad corridor.

Most important to Andy were his relationships. He would lend an ear, a kind word, and a helping hand to anyone. He loved hiking, playing hockey, working out, gardening, cooking, fishing, snowmobiling, boiling sap, watching sunsets, and most importantly, spending time outside with loved ones. Some of his favorite places included Pumpkin Knob, Baxter State Park, Lower Narrows Pond, and Moosehead Lake.

Andy met the love of his life, Wendy, in 2019. They had many adventures, working hand in hand to build the life they chose together. They married in 2023 and enjoyed the everyday moments just as much as the celebrations.

Andy will be missed for his kind heart and 100-watt smile.
