A 24-year-old Cornish man was arrested Monday after he allegedly made threats toward the University of New England in Biddeford.
Blake Tibbetts is accused of making “concerning comments” about the school at a restaurant in Cornish, according to a Tuesday news release from the Maine Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Investigators found bomb-making materials in his home, authorities said.
Tibbetts was evaluated at a hospital before he was transported to the York County Jail, where he is being held on $500,000 cash bail, according to the release.
He is charged with terrorizing, criminal use of explosives and attempting to cause a catastrophe, according to the fire marshal’s office.
UNE senior director of safety and security Jeffrey Greene sent a message to the school community Tuesday morning, saying the school increased security staffing on both its Biddeford and Portland campuses and “maintained close contact with state police.” Greene said a local resident reported the threat to authorities.
“This incident comes at a time when concerns about safety on college campuses are heightened,” Greene’s message read. “But I want to underscore that the systems that are in place to keep our community safe worked.”
Maine State Police say there is no ongoing threat to the UNE community. A spokesperson for the fire marshal’s office declined to provide further details about the threat.
