George Andrew Royal
WINTHROP – Announcing the passing of George Andrew Royal on Aug. 29, 2025, at the Maine General Medical Center.
George, better known as Andy, was born on Sept. 6, 1938, the son of George Edwin Royal and Madeline Lund Royal. Andy was married to his beloved wife Lila Royal for almost 40 years. Andy is survived by two sons, Scott and Michael, from a previous marriage, who now live in Massachusetts. Andy also has one brother, Robert who lives in South Florida with his daughter Shanna.
Growing up Andy was active in Boy Scouts and was inducted into the prestigious Order of the Arrow for young men exemplifying service, brotherhood, and leadership. He also played trumpet in the Deering High School band and was an ROTC member. He ultimately graduated from Cony High in 1956.
Andy attended the Rhode Island School of Design and became a well-known architect in Maine. Andy spent most of his adult life residing in Winthrop, Maine where he established Royal Architects in 1972. He went on to design numerous buildings in Central Maine, including, Central Maine Commerce Center, Maine General Medical Center for Health & Rehabilitation, and Hoyt’s Chiropractic. He also redesigned the Digital Building in Augusta into office space for the State of Maine.
In his retirement Andy was never idle. He enjoyed making furniture and renovating old houses for family and friends. In prior years Andy was active in the Winthrop Lions Club as a past King Lion and past District Governor. He was also an avid bicyclist who rode in the Trek across Maine and cycled through France. He also loved skiing and always welcomed a new challenge.
Andy was a patient, kind and generous person and will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
There will be a graveside service at the family plot at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Augusta, on Sept. 22, 2025, at 9 a.m.
Arrangements and guidance are in the care of Roberts Funeral Home, 62 Bowdoin Street, Winthrop.
