An inmate at Mountain View Correctional Facility in Charleston died on Monday, the Maine Department of Corrections said.

Richard Sweet, 73, formerly of Waterville, died around 8:25 a.m. Monday, the department said in a statement Tuesday evening.

It did not provide a cause of death but said medical staff were with Sweet when he died.

The Office of the Maine Attorney General and the Office of Chief Medical Examiner were notified, which is standard practice, the department said.

Sweet began serving a 35-year sentence for gross sexual assault in 1998.
