AUBURN – Hubert “Sonny” “Papa” Waldon Carter Jr., 86, passed away on Sept. 17, 2025, at Andwell Hospice House in Auburn, with his loving wife, June, by his side.

Sonny attended University of Maine, College of Agriculture and proudly served the Army National Guard of Maine. He worked for both the Augusta Police Department and Meredith, New Hampshire Police Department before returning to Maine where he joined the Maine State Police in 1969. A proud Mason, Sonny was honored in 2024 with his 50 year membership recognition with the King Hiram Lodge #57.

Outside of work and throughout retirement, Papa found joy in hunting, camping, fly fishing and traveling with his wife, Jean and their boys. They treasured time at their family camp at Little Kennebago, made memories camping with friends and spent winters in Alabama. Sonny had a lot of accomplishments in his life but his biggest accomplishments were his boys and grandchildren, who he was always so proud of. Papa will be remembered for his love, his hugs, and his guidance.

After Jean’s passing in 2020, Sonny found love again and married June Gagnon on Feb. 5, 2022. Their time was spent enjoying each other’s company and visiting with family and friends.
