AUGUSTA — A lot can change in 59 years. Just ask the Cony High and Fryeburg Academy football teams.
The teams last met in 1966, when both were in the midst of middling seasons and the current Cony High School was 40 years away from being built. They’ll meet again in different circumstances Friday as they compete for the No. 1 spot in Class B North at Fuller Field.
After breezing to wins over Messalonskee, Brunswick and Mt. Blue, Cony (4-0) survived a much tougher test Saturday at Oxford Hills. Not even a Class A power could stop Cony’s passing game as the Rams prevailed in a thriller that showed they can play with the state’s best.
Cony’s top threat in the region? Enter Fryeburg (4-0), a newcomer that won the Class C state championship last year. Powered by one of the state’s best players in Ty Boone, the Raiders have built off that title run, winning their first three games against their new B North brethren.
Keys to a Fryeburg victory
• Limit big plays. This won’t be easy against a prolific Cony passing game led by a potential Fitzpatrick Trophy candidate in quarterback Parker Morin. The Rams had four pass plays of 30-plus yards in the win over Oxford Hills.
• International flair. All-around athlete Ty Boone (Canada), quarterback Benny Árnason (Iceland), defensive back Truls Wenli (Norway), kicker Ted Carter (England) and lineman Alim Aitimov (Kazakhstan) are among the Raiders’ best players and will be counted on Friday.
Keys to a Cony victory
• Stop Boone. An electrifying player whether under center, in the backfield, in the slot or in the secondary, the senior from Nova Scotia has drawn interest from NCAA Division I and II programs. Keeping him from having a huge game like he did last week against Messalonskee must be Cony’s top priority.
• Handle the emotions. The victory at Oxford Hills was emotionally draining, given the progression of the game and the attrition Cony suffered. The Rams must turn the page while also harnessing the buzz of Homecoming week in a positive way.
Fryeburg impact players
• Senior Ty Boone (8 all-purpose TDs, 5 last week vs. Messalonskee)
• Senior K Ted Carter (3 FG vs. Mt. Blue; 37-yarder vs. Messalonskee)
• Junior QB/DB Benny Árnason (4 TD passes)
• Junior OL/DL Anthony Bond
• Senior DB Truls Wenli

Cony impact players
• Senior QB Parker Morin (46 of 71 passing, 977 yards, 14 TDs, INT)
• Senior WR/DB Ethan Demmons (13 receptions, 363 yards, 5 TDs)
• Senior OL/LB Kaiden Veilleux (23 tackles, four for loss)
• Senior OL/LB David Frye (team-high 28 tackles)
• Senior OL/DL Bohdy King Jones
Last meeting
• Oct. 1, 1966: Fryeburg, 6-0
What they’re saying
• “I think something that can get overlooked (with Cony) is that their ability to stop people defensively creates more possessions for that offense. The more that offense is on the field, the more demoralizing it is, so you really have to be able to move the ball against their defense.” — Fryeburg coach David Turner
• “I think what stands out about (Fryeburg) is that they’ve gotten better throughout the year. You look at their film from Week 1 compared to Week 4, and they’re especially a lot better up front. They’re well-coached, they’re good on special teams, and you can see them starting to jell.” — Cony coach B.L. Lippert
• “They’re good competition, and I think we’re going to have to rally up to the ball and (create) that sea of red, baby. … We’ve recovered from Saturday, I think, and now it’s just all about effort and giving 100 percent.” — Cony senior David Frye
